Scholarship Awards (2017)

Festival Arts of Antioch is pleased to announce the award recipients of the Ken Smouse Memorial Scholarship.  Awards have been given based on their talent, dedication, accomplishments and desire for furthering their skills and goals in the arts.

During the past year, our two scholarship students were Kody Myhra, who is studying Clarinet Performance at Milliken University and already impressing her professors and Mary Cook, who is attending Southeast Missouri State Majoring in Theater Technical Design and Stage Management.  She is already an assistant stage manager for their production of Trueman.  That is an amazing accomplishment for a Freshman.  Our current plan is to continue the high school scholarships this year and to work towards rebuilding and to include other events.

Awards presented in June of 2017 to the following recipients:

Theatre:  Brooke Menzies (Senior)”Act well your part in there the honor lies” is a quote that embodies Brooke Menzies as a performer. Brooke has been an active member of the program, during the day as well as after school. Brooke has been a student choreographer for three years, student director for Thirteen Reasons Why, and multiple roles varying in size. Brooke is a student that every teacher and director dreams of having, she works hard, brings life to the characters she portrays, and will aid others so that they can shine on stage.

Music:  Marian Lafferty (Senior) has participated in vocal and instrumental music throughout her four years at ACHS.  During that time, she has had numerous accomplishments in both.  These include being named Drum Major in the marching band and selected to the ILMEA District 7 Honors Chorus.  She is a natural leader and is very driven in music, having also learned a second instrument to participate in our jazz band.  She is planning to pursue a degree in music at Milliken University in the fall.

Theatre: Elena Gonzalez is a true theatre artist. A participant in every production since her freshman year, Elena excels in leadership positions on and off stage, as stage manager for our musical, leads in plays, and director or multiple projects. With a keen eye for detail, deep compassion and empathy for her peers, clear communication, and a thirst to push herself further, Elena has elevated the productions and potential of Lakes’ Eagle Theatre. This was perhaps most evident in the recent production of A Streetcar Named Desire, which Elena produced, directed, designed, and starred in – it was a stunning performance of a complex classic text. Elena will continue her studies as a Theatre Major at Depaul University’s prestigious theatre conservatory.

Music: Joanne Gorski is a talented and dedicated musician in the Lakes music department. She has been a leader in the both band and choir by being an example to her peers and a resource for her directors. Her involvement spans Marching Band, Color Guard, Winter Guard, Advanced Treble Choir, a’Capella Choir, Jazz Choir, Chamber Choir and Jazz Band. Plus, as a senior, she continued her willingness to grow through risk taking by trying out for the musical for the first time; with no consideration for what part or role she played. She was looking to challenge herself and contribute to the department in any way possible. In all of her time at Lakes, her engagement has always been at full effort both technically and emotionally. This has resulted in her developing a legacy of that everyone can recognize and be proud of, both in the school and in the community.
